Concept explainers
A mule is the offspring of a horse and a donkey. A donkey sperm contains 31 chromosomes and a horse egg has 32 chromosomes, so the zygote contains a total of 63 chromosomes. The zygote develops normally. The combined set of chromosomes is not a problem in mitosis, and the mule combines some of the best characteristics of horses and donkeys. However, a mule is sterile; meiosis cannot occur normally in its testes or ovaries. Explain why mitosis is normal in cells containing both horse and donkey chromosomes but the mixed set of chromosomes Interferes with meiosis.

- Genes on the same chromosome tend to stay together during _____ and end up in the same ______. a. mitosis; body cell b. mitosis; gamete c. meiosis; body cell d. meiosis; gamete e. both a and darrow_forwardExplain why the daughter cells produced by meiosis NEED to be genetically different from each other, whereas the daughter cells produced by mitosis NEED to be identical.arrow_forwardMeiosis ensures the even distribution of chromosomes to the daughter cells. Why does meiosis can result in uneven distribution of chromosomes to the daughter cells?arrow_forward
- Which statement correctly describes human chromosomes after meiosis I? Human gametes end up with one of each type of 23 chromosomes. Human gametes end up with one of each type of 22 chromsomes. There are 46 chromosomes in each cell. The haploid number is 22.arrow_forwardWhich of the statements is FALSE? Somatic cells are diploid in diploid organisms. Gametes are produced from meiosis by germline cells. Somatic cells are capable of both mitosis and meiosis. Somatic cells and gametes from the same organism have different chromosomal complements.arrow_forwardHow is the outcome of meiosis different from the outcome of mitosis? The daughter cells produced in mitosis are genetically different from the parent cells, but have the same number of chromosomes, while these are genetically similar in case of meiosis and have fewer chromosomes. The daughter cells produced in mitosis are genetically similar to the parent cells and have the same number of chromosomes, while these are genetically different in meiosis and have half the number of chromosomes. The daughter cells produced in both cases are genetically similar to the parent cells, but in meiosis, there are fewer chromosomes. The daughter cells produced in both cases are genetically different, but in mitosis, there are fewwer chromosomes in daughter cells.arrow_forward
- A human cell that has gone through the second division of meiosis will contain how many chromosomes?arrow_forwardA Common Wombat has 14 chromosomes in one of its somatic cells. One of these cells goes into meiosis. How many cells result, and how many chromosomes does each one of these cells have?arrow_forwardThe cells produced at the end of Meiosis are not genetically identical. Why is this important?arrow_forward
- Human cells normally have 46 chromosomes. For each of the following stages, state the number of chromosomes present in a human cell: 1. Metaphase of mitosis 2. Metaphase I of meiosis 3. Telophase of mitosis 4. Telophase I of meiosis Telophase II of meiosisarrow_forwardOogenesis is the process of female gamete (ovum or egg) production in animals. Spermatogenesis is the process of male gamete (sperm) production in animals. Although both processes produce gamete(s), there are distinct similarities and differences between the two. Compare and contrast oogenesis to spermatogenesis by drawing a diagram showing the two processes. In your hand-drawn diagrams, be sure to include when the processes of mitosis, meiosis I and meiosis II are occurring identify each germ cell structure and its ploidy highlight 4 differences between the two processesarrow_forwardMeiosis involves two phases, meiosis I and meiosis II. This type of cell division occurs during the formation of both sperm and ovum. The first meiotic division of the primary spermatocyte results in two secondary spermatocytes. .What is the result of the first meiotic division of the primary oocyte? two secondary oocytes two polar bodies O two ovum one secondary oocyte and one polar bodyarrow_forward
