Chapter 8, Problem 19E
Compute Equivalent Units: FIFO Method
Refer to the data in Exercise 8-18. Assume that beginning inventory is 50 percent complete with respect to materials and 30 percent complete with respect to conversion costs.
Required
- a. Compute the equivalent units for materials using FIFO.
- b. Compute the equivalent units for conversion costs using FIFO.
8-18 Compute Equivalent Units: Weighted-Average Method
- Conlon Chemicals manufactures paint thinner. Information on the work in process follows:
- Beginning inventory, 30,000 partially complete gallons.
- Transferred out, 157,500 gallons.
- Ending inventory (materials are 10 percent complete; conversion costs are 20 percent complete).
- Started this month, 180,000 gallons.
Required
- a. Compute the equivalent units for materials using the weighted-average method.
- b. Compute the equivalent units for conversion costs using the weighted-average method.

The beginning work in process inventory consisted of $5,000 in materials and $8,500 in conversion costs before $16,000 of materials and $18,500 of conversion costs were added during the month. The ending WIP inventory was 100% complete with regard to materials and 40% complete with regard to conversion costs. - Materials are added at the beginning of a production process, and ending work in process inventory is 30% complete with respect to conversion costs. Use the information provided to complete a production cost report using the weighted-average method.arrow_forwardGiven the following information, determine the equivalent units of ending work in process for materials and conversion using the weighted-average method: Beginning inventory of 750 units is 100% complete with regard to materials and 30% complete with regard to conversion. 9,500 units were started during the period. 8,900 units were completed and transferred. Ending inventory is 100% complete with regard to materials and 68% complete with regard to conversion.arrow_forwardA company has 100 units in ending work in process that are 40% complete after transferring out 750 Units. It received 9,500 units from the processing department and ended the month with 750 units that were 100% complete with regard to materials and 30% complete with regard to conversion. During November, equivalent units were calculated using the weighted average method: The costs that Byford had to account for during the month of November were as follows: Required: 1. Using the weighted average method, determine unit cost. 2. Under the weighted average method, what is the total cost of units transferred out? What is the cost assigned to units in ending inventory? 3. CONCEPTUAL CONNECTION Bill Johnson, the manager of Byford, is considering switching from weighted average to FIFO. Explain the key differences between the two approaches and make a recommendation to Bill about which method should be used.arrow_forward
