Concept introduction:

The biomolecules that are composed of carbon, hydrogen and oxygen is collectively known as carbohydrates. Based upon the behavior on hydrolysis, carbohydrates can be classified into- monosaccharides, oligosaccharides and polysaccharides. These oligosaccharides are further classified into disaccharides, trisaccharides, tetrasaccharides and pentasaccharides based upon the number of monosaccharide units they possess.  Disaccharides can yield two molecules of monosaccharides on hydrolysis and they are joined together by using glycosidic linkage. Polysaccharides are composed of several monosaccharide units on hydrolysis and they are joined together by glycosidic linkage.
