Chapter 8, Problem 53P
A liquid drug, with the viscosity and density of water, is to be administered through a hypodermic needle. The inside diameter of the needle is 0.25 mm and its length is 50 mm. Determine (a) the maximum volume flow rate for which the flow will be laminar, (b) the pressure drop required to deliver the maximum flow rate, and (c) the corresponding wall shear stress.

At 60°C the surface tension of mercury is 0.47 N/m. What capillary height changes (mm) will occur in this fluid when it is in contact with air in a glass tube of radius 0.25 mm? Use wetting angle = 130° and unit weight = 132,300 N/m3
A pump is being used to transport a liquid food product (density = 1000 Kg/m3, viscosity= 1.2 x 10 -3 Pa-s) from a holding tank to a filling machine at a mass flow rate of 2 Kg/s. The liquid level at the holding tank is 5 m above the pump, and the filling machine is 10 m above the pump. There is 100 m of 2 inch nominal diameter sanitary pipeline (assume: commercial steel) between the holding tank and the filling machine with one open glove valve and three medium sweep 90oelbows in the system. Determine the theoretical power requirement of the pump if the efficiency is 75%.
