Stores, a division of National Clothing, is a chain of women’s apparel stores operating throughout the country. The chain recently ran a promotion in which discount coupons were sent to customers of other National Clothing stores. Data collected for a sample of 100 in-store credit card transactions at Pelican Stores during one day while the promotion was running are contained in the file PelicanStores. Table 3.13 shows a portion of the data set.
The Proprietary Card method of payment refers to charges made using a National Clothing charge card. Customers who made a purchase using a discount coupon are referred to as promotional customers and customers who made a purchase but did not use a discount coupon are referred to as regular customers. Because the promotional coupons were not sent to regular Pelican Stores customers, management considers the sales made to people presenting the promotional coupons as sales it would not otherwise make. Of course, Pelican also hopes that the…
In a 1993 article in Accounting and Business Research, Meier, Alam, and Pearson studied auditor lobbying on several proposed U.S. accounting standards that affect banks and savings and loan associations. As part of this study, the authors investigated auditors’ positions regarding proposed changes in accounting standards that would increase client firms’ reported earnings. It was hypothesized that auditors would favor such proposed changes because their clients’ managers would receive higher compensation (salary, bonuses, and so on) when client earnings were reported to be higher. Table (below) summarizes auditor and client positions (in favor or opposed) regarding proposed changes in accounting standards that would increase client firms’ reported earnings. Here the auditor and client positions are cross-classified versus the size of the client firm.

This act helped address what became famously known as the “fiscal cliff” crisis. However, during the last months of 2012, heated debates concerning the crisis were ongoing in Congress, and there was growing concern political gridlock was preventing a solution of the crisis by the end-of-year deadline. In mid-December, a USA Today– Gallup poll reported that only 18% of a sample of 1025 adult Americans approved of the job Congress was doing in working toward a solution to the looming fiscal cliff. Calculate a two-sided confidence interval using a 99% confidence level for the proportion of all U.S. adults who approved of the congressional handling of the crisis in December 2012.arrow_forwardThe contingency table below shows the results of a survey of video viewing habits by age 18-34 mobile/laptop 39 tv screen 24 35-54 mobile/laptop 14 tv screen 14 55+ mobile/laptop 2 tv screen 7 d. percentage of viewers given they are 18-34 who prefer videos on a mobile or laptop device e. percentage of viewers who are 35-54 or prefer videos on a mobile or laptop devicearrow_forward
