Water is pumped from a reservoir to a pressurized storage tank (P = 150 kPa gauge) atop a building by means of a centrifugal pump. There is a 70-m difference in elevation between the water surface in the reservoir and the end of the discharge line. The piping system consists of 80m of 5" SCH 40 steel pipe containing two 90o elbows, one gate valve, one rotary water meter, and six couplings from the reservoir to the pump; 3" SCH 40 steel pipe for 86m to the tank. The 3" pipe contains two gate valves, four 90o elbows, and ten couplings. It is desired to maintain a flow of water into the tank of 2.4 m3/min. Water temperature is 25oC. If the pump-motor set has efficiency of 65%, what would be the pumping costs be in pesos per day if electricity costs PhP 10.50/kW-hr?

- The old Hydraulics laboratory in Mechanical Engineering used a roof tank tosupply apparatus with water at a nearly constant head. The water wascollected in an under floor sump, and then pumped back to the roof tankafter the experiment. The flow rate was 10 litre s-1. The tank was 6m abovethe sump, and the length of the pipe route was 15 m. The old 6” pipes arenow heavily corroded (k = 7.5 mm). The old pump has been scrapped. Whathead ΔH would be specified for a pump to restore the system using the oldpipes? What would the pump power be? If the pipes were replaced with 150mm diameter PVC pipes, what pump ΔH would be required?arrow_forwardWater at 15°C is to be discharged from a reservoir at a rate of 18 L/s using two horizontal cast iron pipes connected in series and a pump between them. The first pipe is X= 5 m long and has a 6-cm diameter, while the second pipe is 5 m long and has a 4-cm diameter. The water level in the reservoir is 30 m above the centerline of the pipe. The pipe entrance is sharp-edged, and losses associated with the connection of the pump are negligible. Neglecting the effect of the kinetic energy correction factor, determine the required pumping head and the minimum pumping power to maintain the indicated flow rate. (The density and dynamic viscosity of water at 15°C are ρ = 999.1 kg/m3 and μ = 1.138x10-3 kg/m.s. The loss coefficient is KL = 0.5 for a sharp-edged entrance.
