Concept introduction:

In photosynthesis, photon energy (solar energy) is used to build complex molecules. It is often described the opposite of cellular respiration, in which complex molecules are broken down and ATP (adenosine triphosphate) is produced. Both these processes require an electron transport chain (ETC) to synthesize ATP. This ATP is used to build complex organic compound from water and carbon dioxide.
