Chapter 8.5, Problem 15SAQ
Summary Introduction

Cyanobacteria are otherwise termed as Cyanophyta. These bacteria obtain energy through the process of photosynthesis. These bacteria are the only prokaryotic organisms that are able to produce oxygen. These bacteria contain a blue-green pigment named phycocyanin. The cell wall of these bacteria is made of amino acids and sugars.

Explanation of Solution

The two photosystems present in the cyanobacteria are structurally similar to those present in other photosynthetic bacteria, which contains only a single photosystem. Thus, the photosystem in cyanobacteria evolved independently. The two hypotheses of photosystems are based on the transfer of genetic material or gene duplication and divergence.

One hypothesis states that the gene or the genetic material that is associated with one photosystem was transferred to a bacterium that already had a photosystem. This resulted in a single bacterium with both the photosystems. Another hypothesis states that the gene associated with one photosystem underwent duplication. One out of the two photosystems underwent mutation and selection that resulted in two different but related photosystems.
