Interpretation:

The volume/volume percent composition of ethanol in given lemon extract is to be calculated.

Concept introduction:

Several concentration units may be used to express the concentration. It is often useful to express the concentration in terms of percentage. The concentration term that can be expressed as the amount of solute in grams dissolved in 100 mL of solution is termed as weight by volume percentage.

The other way is to express number of milliliters of solute per 100 mL of the solution. This is called the volume /volume percentage which is useful to express the concentrations of liquid solutes.

The conversion factor to convert fluid ounce to milliliters is as follows:

  1 oz=29.6 mL

The formula to calculate the volume/volume percent is as follows:

  Volume/volume percent=(Volume of solute( mL)Volume of solution( mL))(100 %)
