Interpretation:
The solution that is isotonic with the solution represented by the diagram A should be identified.
Concept introduction:
All the membranes found in living systems are semi-permeable in the sense that they allow only selective entry and exit of small molecules and restrict the movement of large particles.
The phenomenon of osmosis may be defined as the process that allows the movement of solvent from the region of high solvent concentration to region of low solvent concentration. The colligative property associated with osmosis is termed as osmotic pressure which may be defined as the least amount of pressure that must be exerted on the solution side so as to prevent the flow of pure solvent across the membrane.
All colligative properties are dependent upon the concentration of particles irrespective of the nature of the particles.

- When 19.77g of glucose, C6H12O6(180.2g/mol), is dissolved in 225.6g of an organic solvent, the freezing point of the resulting solution is 1.06C lower than that of the pure solvent. What is the molality of the solution? What is the value of Kf for the solvent?arrow_forwardA student dissolves 27.2g of aniline, C6H5NH2, in 1.20102g of water. At what temperatures will the solution freeze and boil? Aniline is used in the polyurethane manufacturing process. Materials made from polyurethane include foams as pictured, spandex, hardwood floor coatings, dolly wheels, and many other end products.arrow_forwardPotassium hydrogen phthalate is a solid, monoprotic acid frequently used in the laboratory as a primary standard. It has the formula KHC8H4O4. This is often written in the short-hand notation as KHP. If 25.0mL of a potassium hydroxide solution are needed to neutralize 2.26g of KHP, what is the molarity of the potassium hydroxide solution? Potassium hydrogen phthalate sometimes called potassium biphthalate, as shown on this bottle is an acid that is convenient to store and use because it is a solid.arrow_forward
