Chapter 9, Problem 9C.2AST
Interpretation Introduction

Interpretation:

The hydrate isomers present in which 0.00010mol of CrCl3.6H2O reacts to form 0.00010mol in silver chloride has to be given.

Concept Introduction:

Hydrate Isomers:

Hydrate isomers differ by the exchange of a H2O molecule with another ligand in the coordination sphere.  It can be distinguished by the stoichiometry of reactions in which the ion is exchanged with water.

Example:

2 mole of AgCl can be precipitated from 1 mole [CrCl(OH2)5]Cl2.H2O.

[CrCl(OH2)5]Cl2.H2O+2Ag+[CrCl(OH2)5]H2O+2AgCl

When orange solution containing Cr2O72–ion is treated with an alkali, a yellow solution is formed and when H+ions are added to yellow solution, an orange solution is obtained. Explain why does this happen?
When cobalt(II) chloride is treated, under certain condition, with the bidentate ligand, NH2CH2CH2NH2, (which can be represented by the symbol “en”), the compound [CoC12(en)2]Cl is formed. a. What is the coordination number of cobalt in this compound?
True or false: a.  The metal center in cisplatin, cis-[PtCl2(NH3)2], has an oxidation state of 0 and a coordination number of 4. b.  Thiocyanate (SCN–) and oxalate (C2O42–) ions are examples of bidentate ligands. c.  Dichloridobis(ethylenediamine)chromium(III) has three stereoisomers but no structural isomers.
