Interpretation:
The difference between single replacement and double replacement reaction needs to be explained.
Concept introduction:
Answer to Problem 31SSC
There are two types of displacement reaction, single replacement and double replacement reaction.
Explanation of Solution
There are two types of replacement reaction, single replacement and double replacement reaction. In single replacement reaction, one highly reactive metal replaces the less reactive metals from a compound and in a double displacement reaction, the exchange of ions of two compounds occurs and new compounds are formed.
The difference between single displacement and double displacement reaction are,
single displacement reaction | double displacement reaction |
1)Activity series of metals is followed | 1)Activity series of metals is not followed |
2)Reactants of this type reaction are a metal or a non-metal and a compound. | 2)Reactants of this type reaction are two compounds. |
3)The products of this type reaction are a new compound, the replaced metal and the non-metal. | 3)The products of this type of reaction are two different compounds, one of which is a solid, water or a gas. |
4)Exchange of ions does not take place. | 4)Exchange of ions takes place. |
