Interpretation:
The three common types of products produced by reaction that occurs in aqueous solutions needs to be determined.
Concept introduction:
An aqueous solution having one or more substances termed as solute dissolved in water. In this case, water is solvent. When two aqueous solutions containing ions as solute are combined, the ions might react with another and these reactions are always double displacement reactions.
Answer to Problem 50SSC
Three common types of products produced by reaction that occurs in aqueous solutions are precipitate, water and gas.
Explanation of Solution
The double displacement reactions of aqueous solutions form many products.
Reactions that form precipitates: Some reactions occur in aqueous solutions produces precipitates. When aqueous solution of sodium hydroxide and copper (II) chloride are mixed, precipitate of copper (II) hydroxide forms.
This precipitate is formed because it is not soluble in water.
Reactions that form water: Another type of double displacement reaction that occurs in an aqueous solution produces water molecule. Mixing of hydrobromic acid with sodium hydroxide produces water.
Reactions that form gases: A third type of double replacement reaction that occurs in aqueous solution results in the formation of gas. Some gases produced commonly in these reactions are carbon dioxide, hydrogen cyanide and hydrogen sulphide.
In aqueous solutions, three types of products formed, that is, precipitate, water and gas.
