Chapter 9.3, Problem 4CC
Summary Introduction

To identify:

The result of given experiment, if it is performed with cancer cell with reference to Figure 9.17 “The effect of platelet-derived growth factor (PCGF) on cell division”, in the textbook.

Introduction:

Cancer is term that is characterized by mutations that disrupt the normal cell growth mechanism and produce potentially malignant cell. That can invades and spread in surrounding tissues throughout the body.

As normal cells have the property of contact inhibition, so they are different from cancerous cells. A normal cell in comparison to cancer cell shows density dependent cell proliferation.

Hi, can you elaborate about these two concepts: 1) Can telomere inhibition be good cancer treatment?  2) Can cancer steam cells hypothesis be a good / bad approach?
VISUAL SKILLS Consider the microarray in Figure 20.12.If a sample from normal tissue is labeled with a green fluorescent dye and a sample from cancerous tissue is labeledred, what color spots would represent genes you would beinterested in if you were studying cancer? Explain.
one question with multiple parts! 1A) If you were a cancer biologist interested in developing new drugs that will slow down cancer cell metastasis, which of the following strategies would be most effective? a)Develop an activator of mitosis b)Make Her2 protein that is more active on the surface of the cancer cells c) Develop a molecule that increases telomerase activity d) Gene therapy to add a mutated p53 gene to the cancer cells 1B) You are a genetic counsellor, and a couple comes to you with concerns that if they have a child together the child could have the X-linked recessive disease Duchene muscular dystrophy. The man has the disease whereas the woman is a carrier. Which of the following would be a true statement to tell them? a) 100% of their male offspring will likely be carriers of the recessive allele that causes the disease b) 75% of their female offspring will likely be carriers of the recessive allele that causes the disease c) 100% of their male offspring will likely…
