Interpretation: The following problem can be comprehended by the concept of osmotic pressure.
Concept introduction: The process of osmosis occurs from the tendency of the pure solvent to pass through the semipermeable membrane, into a solution having a solute to which the semipermeable membrane is impervious. Osmotic pressure is minimum pressure required to be applied to a solution to avert the inflow of pure solvent through a semipermeable membrane. The osmosis procedure is of great significance in the physiology of biological cell since the cell membrane is semipermeable in nature.
Given: We are given two compartments (A and B) having 3 different set of solutions of different strengths and separated by semipermeable membrane. We are asked to find out the compartment that will rise in volume for the given pairs of solutions.
