Animal Athletes
Different animals have very different capacities for running. A horse can maintain a top speed of 20 m/s for a long distance but has a maximum acceleration of only 6.0 m/s2, half what a good human sprinter can achieve with a block to push against. Greyhounds, dogs especially bred for feats of running, have a top speed of 17 m /s, but their acceleration is much greater than that of the horse. Greyhounds are particularly adept at turning corners at a run.
Figure 1.1
If a horse starts from rest and accelerates at the maximum value until reaching its top speed, how far does it run, to the nearest 10 m?
A. 40 m
B. 30 m
C. 20 m
D. 10 m

- Conceptual Question: Dynamics of Rigid Bodies (Rotation about a Fixed Axis) All the points on a translating body move with the same velocity and acceleration. Does this mean all the points on a spinning fan blade move with the same velocity and acceleration? Or it still depends on how far that particular point is from the fixed axis?arrow_forwardCable Cars The Los Angeles Cable Railway was driven by a 13-foot-diameter drumthat turned at a rate of 18 revolutions per minute. Find the speed of the cable car, inmiles per hour, by determining the linear velocity of the cable.arrow_forwardI am stuck on this practice question. It is a multi-step question that I am stuck on how to answer. It is asking What’s the total distance traveled by the bug between t = 0 s and the time when the record comes to a stop? I need to first do the following: Calculate the magnitude of the initial tangential velocity of the bugat t = 0 s How long does it take for the bug to come to a stop?arrow_forward
- You start an old record player and notice a bug on the surface close to the edge of the record. The record has a diameter of 12 inches and completes 33 revolutions each minute. What is the speed of the bug in SI units? What is the acceleration of the bug in SI units? What would the bug's speed be if it were halfway between the center and the edge of the record? What would the bug's acceleration be if it were halfway between the center and the edge of the record?arrow_forwardNASA’s 20-G centrifuge (https://www.nasa.gov/ames/research/space-biosciences/20-g-centrifuge) can be used to test the limits of human tolerance to extreme accelerations. According to NASA’s site, the centrifugehas a radius of 29 ft. If the centrifuge is spun at 31 revolutions per minute, what centripetal acceleration willthe occupant experience?arrow_forwardYour friend describes the motion of a car using this phrase: “The car rounded the turn at a constant velocity of 45 miles per hour.” Is your friend describing this car’s motion correctly (physics definitions, not everyday definitions!)? If they are, tell me why. If they aren’t tell me what correction you would make.arrow_forward
- Anna Litical is practicing a centripetal force demonstration at home. She fills a bucket with water, ties it to a strong rope, and spins it in a circle. Anna spins the bucket when it is half-full of water and when it is quarter-full of water. In which case is more force required to spin the bucket in a circle? Explain using an equation as a "guide to thinking."arrow_forwardCENTRIPETAL ACCELERATION PROBLEM: What is the acceleration of a motor-bike rider, if his velocity is 25m/s on a circular track with a radius of 125m?arrow_forwardIt is well known that runners run more slowly around a curved track than a straight one. One hypothesis to explain this is that the total force from the track on a runner's feet--the magnitude of the vector sum of the normal force (that has average value mgmg to counteract gravity) and the inward-directed friction force that causes the runner's centripetal acceleration--is greater when running around a curve than on a straight track. Runners compensate for this greater force by increasing the time their feet are in contact with the ground, which slows them down. For sprinters running at 8 m/s around a curved track of radius 16 m, how much greater (as a percentage) is the average total force on their feet compared to when they are running in a straight line?arrow_forward
- A lapidary plate at rest is turned on to cut a gemstone. The plate rotates until it reaches an angular speed of 12.0 rad/s in 4.0 s. What is the centripetal acceleration of a point 0.10 m from the center of the plate?arrow_forwardAn office door is given a sharp push and swings open against a pneumatic device that slows the door down and then reverses its motion. At the moment the door is open the widest, (a) does the doorknob have a centripetal acceleration? (b) Does it have a tangential acceleration?arrow_forwardImagine a car is turning around a corner, it will slide off the road if it is turning at a very fast speed. Use what you have learned about friction and circular motion to explain why.arrow_forward
