Average Cost Per Drink
To save the environment, the Lion's Den Cafeteria sells an empty reusable 24–ounce plastic mug to students for $2.99. Using the mug. a student can get a 24–ounce soft drink for a reduced price of 69 cents.
a) If a student buys the mug and uses it only once, then what is the cost for that one drink?
b) If a student buys the mug and uses it twice, then what is the average cost per drink?
c) Does the average cost per drink increase or decrease as the mug is used more and more?
d) If the regular price of a 24–ounce soft drink is 89 cents, then when does the student start saving money?
e) Write a rational expression for which the value of the expression is the average cost per drink and n is the number of times the mug is used.
f) If a student buys the mug and uses it every day for a semester, then what is the approximate average cost per drink?
g) If a professional student buys the mug and uses it every day for many years, then what value is the average cost per drink approaching?
h) Use a computer to create a graph showing the number of drinks purchased and the average cost per drink. Make sure that the graph illustrates your answer to part (g).

- Greek Mythology Can the Greek hero Achilles, running at 20 feet per second, ever catch a tortoise, starting 20 feet ahead of Achilles and running at 10 feet per second? The Greek mathematician Zeno said no. When Achilles runs 20 feet, the tortoise will be 10 feet ahead. Then, when Achilles runs 10 feet, the tortoise will be 5 feet ahead. Achilles will keep cutting the distance in half but will never catch the tortoise. The table shows Zeno’s reasoning. In the table, both the distances and the times required to achieve them form infinite geometric series. Using the table, show that both series have finite sums. What do these sums represent?arrow_forwardTrade Discount Often retailers sell merchandise at a suggested retail price determined by the manufacturer. The trade discount is the percentage discount given to the retailer by the manufacturer. The resulting price is the retailers net cost and so is called the cost price. For example, if the suggested retail price is 100.00 and the trade discount is 45%, then the cost price is 100.00-45%100=55.00 dollars. a. If an item has a suggested retail price of 9.99 and the trade discount is 40%, what is the retailers cost price? b. If item has a cost price of 37.00 and a suggested retail price of 65.00, what trade discount was used?arrow_forward
