Chapter S2, Problem 50EAP

Time Dilation.

  1. A student, after learning about the theory of relativity, decides to try to prolong his life by spending the rest of his life traveling in a car at 55 miles per hour (89 km/hr). If he does this while 70 years pass in his house, how much time will pass in the car? (Hint: If you are unable to find a difference, be sure to explain why.)
  2. A more clever student decides to prolong her life by cruising among the stars at a speed of 0.95c. How much time will pass on her spacecraft during a period in which 70 years pass on Earth? Will she feel as if her life span has been extended? Explain.
  3. Suppose you stay home on Earth while your twin sister takes a trip to a distant star and back in a spaceship that travels at 99% of the speed of light. If both of you are 25 years old when she leaves and you are 45 years old when she returns, how old is your sister when she gets back?

Students have asked these similar questions
Suppose you are planning a trip in which a spacecraft is to travel at a constant velocity for exactly six months, as measured by a clock on board the spacecraft, and then return home at the same speed. Upon return, the people on earth will have advanced exactly 76 years into the future. According to special relativity, how fast must you travel? (Give your answer with six significant digits as a multiple of c.)
In the movie Interstellar, the main characters are on a planet where 1 hour = 7 years on Earth. If you are 30 years old on Earth how many hours have passed by on the planet?
In the context of relativity, what is an "event"?  Give a specific example of an event and provide the coordinates necessary to specify the event.
