Concept explainers
Interpretation:
The reason due to which an acid cannot be turned into a base by diluting with water needs to be explained.
Concept introduction:
When an acid solution is diluted the concentration of the acid as well as the concentration of H+ decreases.
Answer to Problem 2E
Dilution of acid can decreases the hydrogen ion concentration but the solution remains acidic in nature.
Explanation of Solution
When an acid solution is diluted then the acidic strength of the solution decreases. When large amount of water is added, the presence of an acid in certain volume of solution is almost negligible. Thus, this highly diluted acid solution can have pH value slightly less than 7. Thus, dilution of acid can decreases the hydrogen ion concentration but the solution remains acidic in nature.
