Report
CHEM 220: Principles of Chemistry II University of Washington 1 Spinach Extractions The purpose of this report is to practice producing a clear and meaningful figure. The final report should be digitally-created and submitted as a single PDF document to Gradescope, maintaining all formatting and page breaks of the template document. In the space below, insert a figure that shows the absorbance spectra of your yellow sample and your green sample (on one set of axes). Absorbance (arbitrary units) should be plotted on the y-axis, and wavelength (in nanometers) should be plotted on the x-axis. Make sure your axes have titles and units, that the absorbance data are clear lines that indicate which sample is which, and make sure that the figure is scaled appropriately. figure 1: wavelength composed from the absorbency of b-carotene using a spectrometer. Using a sample of spinach to create the yellow band(b-carotene) that was collected in a vial to create the data shown above. figure 2: wavelength composed from the absorbency of a sample of spinach (chlorophyll) sample. Using acetone to get a green band(chlorophyll) that was collected in a vial to create the data shown above. -0.400 -0.200 0.000 0.200 0.400 0.600 0.800 1.000 1.200 1.400 1.600 0.00 100.00 200.00 300.00 400.00 500.00 600.00 700.00 800.00 900.00 Yellow Sample Absorbance Wavelength Absorbancy and Wavelength of B-carotene -0.200 0.000 0.200 0.400 0.600 0.800 1.000 1.200 1.400 1.600 1.800 0.00 100.00 200.00 300.00 400.00 500.00 600.00 700.00 800.00 900.00 Green Sample Absorbance Wavelength Absorbancy and Wavelength of Chlorophyll
CHEM 220: Principles of Chemistry II University of Washington 2 Write a meaningful caption for your figure. It may be appropriate to cite where and how the data were generated and/or what key aspects your reader should notice about the data. A good caption will likely be 1-4 sentences. Analysis: b -carotene has reported literature λ max values at 425, 448, and 475 nm. Is this consistent with your data? Briefly explain (1-3 sentences). The values 425, 448, and 475 nm are consistent with the class data used above. B-carotene is violet blue which we see is at 400-500nm. We see that the λ max is constant with the first peak in our graph where the absorbencies lay and how they relate with the absorbency at that exact time.
