How did you find your subject matter expert (SME)? Discuss any difficulties and how you overcame them.
Finding my SME was difficult. I had reached out to some of my past professors, who did not respond back to me. I also reached out to some of my local businesses, with varying degrees of luck, though most of the people who I would be able to interview, I had to make an appointment to see, and would not have been able to interview them until mid to late September. I was able to contact Dr. Klatka who directed me to Dr. Blake Escudier, who allowed me to interview him.
As you asked your SME questions about the areas you wanted to learn more about, what were the important points or areas of greatest learning for you? Were there any surprises?
I asked Dr. Escudier four questions: In his experience, what is the overall importance of market research? Who has the most to gain from market research? How does he know when he has gathered the right amount of research? When conducting market research, how does he avoid both respondent bias and researcher bias?
I have a basic understanding of marketing and marketing research, though I am more drawn to the statistical analysis of the data, hence the last question I asked him about avoiding bias.
Did the interview results provide any new ideas for you to explore?
I have not yet been able to do the interview, as I was just able to contact him on Friday, August 25, 2023, and will be completing the interview with him on Monday, August 28, 2023.
What links were you able to see between the information you gathered and the marketing research information provided for you in the simulation?
Getting accurate customer data is vital to making good business decisions. This data includes the customer preference along with their needs and the best way in which to meet them. Within the simulation, we are making decisions based on the market research that we are given.

Your company’s national sales manager has mandated that each salesperson must undergo training upon initially being hired and retraining every two years after that. You are very skeptical about training being of much value for seasoned salespeople who are performing well, and it’s frustrating and costly in terms of lost sales to pull them out of their territories for centralized training. Therefore, you’ve decided to do all the training of your experienced salespeople online via e-learning on your company’s intranet, so your salespeople can complete the programs on their own time after their normal working hours. You’ve heard that it’s best for the salespeople to interact with and learn from each other in their training, so you’ve encouraged the salespeople to contact each other to share perspectives. With the training budget money saved, you hold a party for all the salespeople who complete the e-learning on time and give special awards to those who score highest. In the first…

As a manager for a hospital, you oversee a staff of marketing associates. Their job is to find doctors and persuade them to refer their patients to your hospital. Associates have a very flexible work schedule and manage their own time. They report to you weekly concerning their activities in the field. Trusting them is very important, and it is impossible to track and confirm all of their activities. Your assistant, Nancy, manages the support staff for the associates, works very closely with them, and often serves as your eyes and ears to keep you informed as to how well they are performing. One day, Nancy comes into your office crying and tells you that your top-performing associate, Susan, has for the past few weeks repeatedly asked her out to dinner and she has repeatedly refused. Susan is a lesbian and Nancy is not. Today, when she refused, Susan patted her on the bottom and said, “I know, you are just playing hard to get.” After Nancy calms down, you tell her that you will fill…
