Everyday Functions
What sorts of data and functions do you already use in your day-to-day life that would benefit from automatic calculation in an Excel spreadsheet? Create a post in which you identify one or two ideas. Describe the analytical problem you're trying to address and how you think Excel would help you do so better.
Instructions:
You are required to participate meaningfully in course discussions.
You must post to the board before seeing other students' posts. You are encouraged to respond and engage meaningfully with your peers.
Your responses will be reviewed according to the following criteria:
o
Comprehension: Demonstrates an understanding of course content.
o
Synthesis: Demonstrates ability to synthesize course content within
the project topic.
o
Originality: Utilizes your own original thinking.
o
Development: Clearly articulates and fully addresses all required questions/topics.

There are many pools of data and functions that are used in my day-to-day life. How much of normal everyday life can be calculated and analyzed? I would assume a good portion of that and
I look forward to gathering the skills needed to gather that data, organize it and find use of that information. The two that stick out to me are the family calendar and our personal finances. The analytical problem for the family calendar that I would like Excel to solve for would be time management. Our family has many activities and events that need to be accounted for on any day. In addition to those commitments that are the family tasks that need to be completed.
Such as household chores, homework, and practicing. How could we use our time between other commitments to accomplish these tasks. I think Excel could help identify which tasks could be accomplished in the allotted times within the calendar. My assumption would be that the project time effort for each task would first need to be identified along with the other variables for the allotted times.
For our personal finances, I would think Excel would be an ideal tool to help solve for understanding what is coming in versus what is being paid out. The problem I would like help solving would be areas of opportunity to cut expenses and where are the areas of greatest financial drain. I believe Excel has formulas that could help calculate these areas of opportunity in our family finances. Thank you,
Erin Schebler
I am a newer business analyst and one of the many topics I have been asked to review is sales data. This sales data can be overwhelming. It will include many different variables including quantity, market segment and plan demographics. I would want to understand any patterns and
visualize the best way to define these groups within the data. In addition to the valuable functions we learned, for example sum and copying data into new cells, using VLOOKUP can help organizing this sales data. I originally found this to be a daunting task but with the skills I am building through this class, I know have a foundation of how to organize the data in a more visually appealing way.
Thank you,
Erin Schebler

The first stage of research is to identify problems or issues in business and management (or in
the learner's field of study) and to justify the need for research. To this end, you are required
to choose a research topic in a field of study that is of interest to you. Then, you need to
formulate the problem statement related to the chosen topic. To ensure that the problem that
you have identified exists and it is significant, you need to provide actual facts and figures to
support it. You are also required to determine the research questions and objectives suitable to
the research problem. Finally, you must explain why it is important to do the research. Your
report for Task 1 should include the following:
1. Introduction and Research Background
2. Problem statement, research question(s) and research objectives
3. Significance of Research

You are the new dean of the college of business administration at a major university. One of the first tasks you have undertaken is a review of the salaries of your non-tenured faculty members. You note that the OB instructor has similar credentials to the marketing instructor, but is paid $5,000 less per year for similar teaching duties. You are also aware that faculty members recently found out salaries of all instructors when the payroll office erroneously sent an email with that information attached. Based on your knowledge of equity theory, what reactions to the inequity might you expect, and how would you address them?

The Lowlands publishing company has decided to launch a new magazine for financial special-ists with the brand new title The Daily Financial Times. The problem is that this has not been done before. The Lowlands management does not have a clue how many copies will be sold and they think it will be somewhere between 60 000 and 120 000 copies. The magazine sells for €4 and the variable cost to print is €1.20. Unsold magazines are destroyed. Required:
1. Prepare a results matrix (or pay-off table) for different levels of demand: 60 000, 80 000, 100 000 and 120 000.
2. Suppose Lowlands management wants to avoid being blamed afterwards for having selected the wrong production plan, what production level should they then choose?

Tufte's argument that the space shuttle Challenger disaster was a direct result of the poorly displayed information. This example of the possible consequences of poor data display is certainly extreme. But similarly, poor data displays are an everyday occurrence in many organizations in the world and lead to mistakes; missed opportunities; and the loss of time, money, and sometimes, life or limb.
the development of new ways of visualizing information is an active and exciting area of current research. However, to properly and effectively apply these new methods, one must first develop an awareness of where and how information is currently being displayed badly.
Find an example of a poor information display that is currently in use in a business organization. This can be a chart that doesn't include all the information needed to draw a correct conclusion from the data presented, one that hides the important information behind a clutter of irrelevant data, one that forces incorrect…
