1 Name: Date: 9/28/2023 Partners: PHYS 2108 Section: 13 Lab Title: Work and Energy Lab Report 5 Prelab (2 points) Purpose The purpose of this lab is to study work and energy in multiple situations. Procedure (Please keep under ½ page) The sled with weights was dragged from the 20cm mark to the 100 cm mark with a constant speed. Each trial was repeated 6 times with varying in angle. The force was measured each time with a force sensor. Each part of the sled (+weights) were individually weighed with a triple beam balance. With the collected data, we calculated the work, potential energy, and percent loss in total work. During Lab (Findings) Analysis (7points) Data Table 1: Raw Measurements Incline Angle (°) Force (N) Final Height (m) Initial Height (m) 1 2.40 3.94 0.0288 0.0150 2 6.35 5.24 0.0563 0.0200 3 9.70 5.94 0.0785 0.0238 4 11.3 5.47 0.0875 0.0263 5 13.1 6.08 0.0999 0.0288 6 15.8 7.77 0.120 0.0325 Data Table 2: Masses

The reason being is underestimation would be the error presented in the instruments. The meter stick could possibly be uneven along with the table not being leveled. 2. The surface is at an incline. The object on the incline requires has to have another force acting upon it to move it. In this experiment, there was an applied force to pull the object. It felt like the object was heavier. 3. The energy was converted into friction.
3 4. The stored energy is converted to kinetic energy. As the incline increases in angle, the stored energy will increase because of the friction on the object. More energy is needed to pull the object up the incline. Meanwhile the object is not just mass but also gravity. The percent loss of the total work will decrease. Application (12 points) 1. E.) When trying to lift the blocks, it uses more energy to pick one by one up. The ramp helps the block get from the initial to the destination. 2. The nerves in your brain will send a signal to your arms that the mass plus gravity is getting heavier. This requires more energy to be used. So, your arms will be fighting against mass and gravity (contracting muscles). After a while your muscles cannot contract anymore causing an involuntarily relaxation, therefore, the book falls. You can only have so much energy to keep strength equal to the opposing force on the book. 3.

4 He is driving over the speed limit of the area. Conclusion (4 points) Include lab summary/what you learned (2 points) and sources of error (2 point) This lab expands our knowledge of the correlation of work and energy. We used the average force and the change in height allowed us to calculate the work (J) done. An error with collecting the data is not rezeroing the force sensor between each trial. Another error is not rezeroing the triple-beam-balance. Not rezeroing each item could lead to inaccurate results.
