Name: Date: 9/7/2023 Partners: PHYS 2108 Section: 13 Lab Title: Measurement of Mass, Length, and Time Lab Report 2 Prelab (2 points) Purpose Taking the measurement of multiple items (mass, length, and time). Each measurement has a specific unit along with the measurement. All the fundamental units must be in metric system (MKS). Which leads to learning unit conversions for any measurement. Procedure Measure the length and width of the tabletop. The length and width of the table will be calculated for the area. The mass of a plastic object was found by a triple beam balance. A digital caliper found the dimensions of the plastic object and the diameter and length of a white metal cylinder. The mean and standard deviation was found with each item measured. Each measurement has their corresponding unit (in metric units). During Lab (Findings) Analysis (15 points) Please attach all data tables and calculations after this page. The measurement used to find the area of the tabletop was the values from the 2- meter meterstick. I chose those values because the standard deviation of those values was lower than the 1-meter meterstick values. The lowest standard deviation shows a smaller range of data giving a more accurate measurement. A larger standard deviation would have a larger range of data therefore, the measurements are less accurate. 2. As more measurements are taken, the precision will improve. Each measurement taken will likely not be the same as the previous measurement. Accuracy will be lost because each measurement will be similar in value as the accurate value could be
something different. Taking multiple measurements takes out any uncertainties of outliers. 3. The two cylinders are not made from the same material. The mass of the golden metal is larger than the white metal. A good tolerance would be around +/- 5% Application (10 points) 1. Saying you put $20 in your tank implies that $20 WORTH of gas was put into the tank. Gas prices are given as price/gallon. Along with that, prices are fluctuating constantly. To calculate the amount of gas got, you find the amount gas is and divide that by the $20 used. 2. 3. G2 would be the better measurement (less precise). The range from the mean and standard deviation will cover the accepted value of 9.8. 4. The AR-15 is a new gun which should assume that the technology of the gun has improved (high accuracy and precision). But the AR-15 was not accurate. The big surprise is the center was not hit. The firearm is the issue. He could not see the target; therefore, he wasn’t able to correct his technique. If the target was adjusted closer to be in line-of-sight, AR-15 would be both accurate and precise. Conclusion (4 points) Include lab summary (2 points) and sources of error (2 points). Remember, sources of error cannot be human error. The area of a tabletop was calculated by measuring with a 1-meter meterstick and a 2-meter meterstick. Found the dimensions and mass of a plastic object with a triple beam balance and digital caliper. The dimensions, volume, weight, and weight density were found with a digital caliper and calculations. The tools used to measure were not in metric units. Each measurement was converted to the metric unit. An error could have been

converting the measurements wrong. The wrong conversion of the measurement could be in the wrong unit asked. Therefore, the concluding measurements would be skewed. Certain tools need to be reset or set to zero to be able to measure the next item. Forgetting to zero the tool could lead to an inaccurate measure. The measurement given would be incorrect to a certain value.
