Chapter 10, Problem 23P
Interpretation Introduction

Interpretation:

The number of different isomers expected from the chlorination of (R)-2-chlorobutane and the number of fractions obtained by fractional distillation are to be given. Also, the optical activity of these fractions is to be checked.

Concept introduction:

A mixture of isomeric monochlorinated products is formed by the chlorination of higher alkanes. Chlorination is unselective, thus it leads to the complex mixture of products.

The optically active compounds are those that contain at least one chiral center.

A chiral center is a carbon atom attached to 4 different substituents.

Give the structure, exclusive of stereochemistry, of the principal organic product formed on reaction of 2,3-dimethyl-1,3-butadiene with each of the following:(a) 2 mol H2, platinum catalyst(b) 1 mol HCl (product of 1,2-addition)(c) 1 mol HCl (product of 1,4-addition)(d) 1 mol Br2 (product of 1,2-addition)(e) 1 mol Br2 (product of 1,4-addition)(f) 2 mol Br2
For each alkane, which mono brominated derivatives could you form in good yield by free-radical bromination?(a) cyclopentane                                                   (b) methylcyclopentane(c) 2-methylpentane                                             (d) 2,2,3,3-tetramethylbutane
Give reasons: (i) C—Cl bond length in chlorobenzene is shorter than C—Cl bond length in CH3—Cl.(ii) The dipole moment of chlorobenzene is lower than that of cyclohexyl chloride.(iii) SN1 reactions are accompanied by racemization in optically active alkyl halides
