Concept explainers
Ed the robot is standing at point A and will walk to point D along the route shown on the map in Figure 10.32. 0n the map. each segment between two dots represents 10 of Ed‘s paces.
A. Trace or redraw the map in Figure 10.329. At the points where Ed will turn, indicate his angle of turning. Use a protector to measure these angles, an mark themon the map
Figure 10.32 ED’s route
B. Ed is a robot, so you must tell Ed exactly how to walk to point D. At points where Ed must turn, tell him how many degrees to turn, and which way.
C. Determine Ed’s total amount of turning along his route by adding the angles you measured in part (a).
D. Now determine Ed's total amount of turning along his route without measuring the individual angles and adding them. Hint: Consider the directions that Ed faces as he travels along his route

- Use the information given in Figure 1 to find x, h, s, and r if y=3. (Note: s is the distance from A to D. and y is the distance from D to B .)arrow_forwardLaying Phone Cable City A lies on the north bank of a river that is 1 mile wide. You need to run a phone cable from City A to City B, which lies on the opposite bank 5 miles down the river. You will lay L miles of the cable along the north shore of the river, and from the end of that stretch of cable you will lay W miles of cable running under water directly toward City B. See Figure 2.108. Figure 2.108 You will need the following fact about right triangles: A right triangle has two legs, which meet at the right angle, and the hypotenuse, which is the longest side. An ancient and beautiful formula, the Pythagorean theorem, relates the lengths of the three sides: Lengthofhypotenuse=Lengthofoneleg2+Lengthofotherleg2 a. Find an appropriate right triangle that shows that W=1+(5L)2 b. Find a formula for the length of the total phone cable P from City A to City B as a function of L. c. Make a graph of the total phone cable length P as a function of L, and explain what the graph is showing. d. What value of L gives the least length for the total phone cable? Draw a picture showing the least-length total phone cable.arrow_forwardGiven: XYZ with angles as shown in the drawing Find: XY HINT: Compare this drawing to the one for Exercise 20.arrow_forward
- Refer to the following figure in answering Exercises 7 through 13. It may be helpful to sketch figures. When 1 is slightly greater than 0: a. How does side y compare to side r? b. Use the fact that the congruent diagonals of a rectangle bisect each other. Be sure to provide a drawing. bUse the relationship from part a to find CM, the length of the median to the hypotenuse of right ABC, in which mC=90, AC = 6, and BC = 8.arrow_forward
