Impairment; property, plant, and equipment
• LO11–8
General Optic Corporation operates a manufacturing plant in Arizona. Due to a significant decline in demand for the product manufactured at the Arizona site, an impairment test is deemed appropriate. Management has acquired the following information for the assets at the plant:
Cost | $ 32,500,000 |
14,200,000 | |
General’s estimate of the total |
15,000,000 |
The fair value of the Arizona plant is estimated to be $11,000,000.
Required:
1. Determine the amount of impairment loss, if any.
2. If a loss is indicated, where would it appear in General Optic’s multiple-step income statement?
3. If a loss is indicated, prepare the entry to record the loss.
4. Repeat requirement 1 assuming that the estimated undiscounted sum of future cash flows is $12,000,000 instead of $15,000,000.
5. Repeat requirement 1 assuming that the estimated undiscounted sum of future cash flows is $19,000,000 instead of $15,000,000

- Exercise 9.11 (Algo) Depletion of Natural Resources (LO9-7) Salter Mining Company purchased the Northern Tier Mine for $88 million cash. The mine was estimated to contain 1.45 million tons of ore and to have a residual value of $1.4 million. During the first year of mining operations at the Northern Tier Mine, 95,000 tons of ore were mined, of which 18,000 tons were sold. a. Prepare a journal entry to record depletion during the year. b. Show how the Northern Tier Mine, and its accumulated depletion, would appear in Salter Mining Company's balance sheet after the first year of operations.arrow_forwardQuestion 11 A cash-generating unit comprises the following assets: £000 700 200 90 20 1,010 Building Plant and equipment Goodwill Current assets Following an impairment review it was discovered that an item of plant carried at £40,000 is damaged and will have to be scrapped. The recoverable amount of the cash-generating unit is estimated at £750,000. Required: What will be the carrying amount of the building after the impairment loss has been recognised (to the nearest £000).arrow_forwardJournalizing natural resource depletion Cannon Mountain Mining paid $462,300 for the right to extract mineral assets from a 400,000-ton deposit. In addition to the purchase price, Cannon also paid a $900 filing fee, a $1,800 license fee to the state of Nevada, and $55,000 for a geological survey of the property. Because Cannon purchased the rights to the minerals only and did not purchase the land, it expects the asset to have zero residual value. During the first year, Cannon removed and sold 50,000 tons of minerals. Make journal entries to record (a) purchase of the minerals (debit Minerals), (b) payment of fees and other costs, and (c) depletion for the first year.arrow_forward
- 8. ABC has determined that one of its cash generating units (CGU) is impaired. The assets of the CGU at their book value are: Land – 4,000,000; Factory – 1,200,000; Machinery and Equipment – 1,800,000. The value in use of the cash generating unit is P5,500,000. The factory’s fair value is P1,000,000. The impairment loss allocated to Machinery and Equipment is? The computer was depreciated using the straight-line method over an estimated five-year life with an estimated residual value of $6,000. On January 1, 2024, the estimate of useful life was changed to a total of 10 years, and the estimate of residual value was changed to $1,200 Exercise 11-23 (Algo) Part 2 2. During a review of the asset for impairment, the company estimates the expected future cash flows from the use and disposal of the asset to be $200,000. There is an active market for this asset, and the fair value of the asset, calculated as the present value of expected future cash flows, is $140,000. Should this asset be considered impaired? O No, because the estimate of expected future cash flows (undiscounted) is greater than the book value.
