A rectangular column with cross-sectionaldimensions b and h is pin-supported at ends A and C(see figure). At mid-height, the column is restrainedin the plane of the figure but is free to deflect perpendicularlyto the plane of the figure.Determine the ratio h/b such that the critical loadis the same for buckling in the two principal planesof the column.
In the case of buckling:
Determine the maximum concentrated vertical load P that can act on the top of the pillar of the figure. The load is applied at the centroid of the column cross section. Consider that the column is set at the top and base, and that the beams only act constraining the column displacement in the x-axis direction. The pillar can buckle in the two x and y directions.
Use: E = 30 GPa, L = 5 m, b = 15 cm, h = 30 cm, σesc = 60 MPa
A column has a fixed support at both ends. If the dimensions of the column section are as given in the figure, calculate the critical buckling load. (The length of the column is L=7 meters and its modulus in elasticity is E=200 GPa)

- A long slender column ABC is pinned at ends A and C and compressed by an axial force F (sec figure). At the midpoint B, lateral support is provided to prevent deflection in the plane of the figure.
