Explanation of Solution

Given:

The given figure is shown in Figure 1

Figure 1

Calculation:

Consider the random variable is X that represents the sum of the values of two spins of the spinning wheels.

The minimum value of the wheel is 2 and maximum is 12, the X can take any value 4 to 24. Thus, the even space of the random variable is,

  S={4,6,7,8,9,.......,19,20,22,24}

Consider the definition of the theatrical probability as,

  P(X)=totalnumberoffavourableeventTotalnumberofevent

The random variable can take any value of 4 in one ways as 2 in spin 1 and 2 in spin 2.

The wheel spun the number that can appear are {2,4,5,6,7,8,10,12} . This is the total number of event that corresponds to each of the spun is 8. Here, the area of each sector is neglected as each of the sector looks same to each other thus,

  P(2in1stspin)=18

And,

  P(2in2ndspin)=18

Hence,

  P(X=4)=(18)(18)=164

Similarly the random variable X can take the value 6 in two ways as,

    1st spin24
    2nd spin42

Then, the probability is,

  P(6)=(18)(18)+(18)(18)=132

Similarly the random variable X can take the value 12 in two ways as,

    1st spin25486102
    2nd spin52846210

Then, the probability is,

  P(12)=(18)(18)+(18)(18)+(18)(18)+(18)(18)=764

Similarly the random variable X can take the value 20 in two ways as,

    1st spin10128
    2nd spin10812

Then, the probability is,

  P(20)=(18)(18)+(18)(18)+(18)(18)=364

Thus, the relative frequency table is shown in Table 1

Answer to Problem 5CYU

Thevalue of the random variable is 13.5 .

Explanation of Solution

Consider the formula to determine the expected value of the random variable is,

  E(X)=i=1nP(X=xi)

Then,

  E(X)=(4(164)+6(132)+8(364)+10(564)+11(116)+12(764)+13(116)+14(764)+15(116)+16(564)17(116)+18(116)+16(132)+20(364)+22(132)+24(164))\=13.5

Answer to Problem 5CYU

The value of the standard deviation is 4.2866 .

Explanation of Solution

Consider the formula to determine standard deviation of the random variable X is,

  σ=i=1n[xiE(X)]P(x=xi)

Therefore,

  σ2=((413.5)2P(X=4)+(613.5)P(X=6)+...+(2213.5)2P(X=22)+(2413.5)2(X=24))σ2=18.3750σ=4.2866
