Chapter 12, Problem 17TYK
Summary Introduction
To review:
The arguments that can be made by a lawyer to deny a person’s paternity based on a test of blood type, and whether the test could prove that the person is the father of the child.
Introduction:
A homozygous allelic pair is one that has the same genes with both coding either for dominant genes or for recessive genes. A heterozygous allelic pair is one that contains two genes, which code for dominant genes and recessive genes. In the case of multiple allelism or co-dominance, more than one allele can code for the same trait and can be dominant for the trait. The best example is ABO blood grouping.

A woman with type AB blood gave birth to a baby with type B blood. Two different men claim to be the father. One has type A blood, the other type B blood. Can the genetic evidence decide in favor of either? Will you be able to confidently decide on the identity of the father based solely on the data on blood type? Support your answer by showing your solutions and interpreting your data.
blood typing is often used as evidence in paternity cases in the court of law. In one case, the mother had a blood type a and the child had a blood type O. Is it possible for the father to have blood type AB? Explain your reasoning.

Evaluate the lawsuit on the basis of geneticsarrow_forwardSome geneticists, notably Nobel Prize-winner Dr. Herman J. Muller, have proposed that sperm banks solicit donations of sperm cells from carefully selected men whose lives had shown unusual mental, emotional, or physical gifts. Couples would then be able to select the genetic material of their choice and thereby produce a child endowed with the hereditary characteristics that matched their ideals. - Biological determinism is the idea that most human characteristics, physical and mental, are determined at conception by hereditary factors passed from parent to offspring. However, this approach is considered limiting. Why is that?arrow_forwardFor this problem, use the information given in problem 15. A young woman with blood type O gave birth to a baby with blood type O. In a court case, she claims that a certain young man is the father of her child. The man has type A blood. Could he be the father? Can it be proven on this evidence alone that he is the father? ^Need answers to that one, including genotype, phenotype gametes and punnett square. This is question 15 as a little background dont need this solved . In humans, there are three alleles for blood type: A, B, and O. The allele for blood type A and the allele for blood type B show incomplete dominance. A person with both alleles has blood type AB. Both A and B dominate type O. - A particular person is said to be a carrier of a genetic trait. What does this tell you about their phenotype? (a) They physically show the trait. (b) They physically show the trait more than a noncarrier would show the trait.(c) They are almost normal but show an intermediate phenotype for the trait. (d) They are completely normal and do not physically show the trait.arrow_forwardA female is a carrier of the allele for color blindness and is married to a colorblind male. What will be there offspring be? Use a punnett square to justify your answerarrow_forwardDraw a punnett square for each problem. Please be careful to notice whether a trait is homozygous or heterozygous. One parent has O type blood. The other parent has heterozygous B type blood. What are all the possible blood types the children may have? Answer:____________O ____________A _____________B _____________AB In a paternity case a man is accused of having fathered a child.
