Concept explainers
Interpretation: The difference between an observation and a theory needs to be explained.
Concept Introduction:Both,an observation and a theory, plays an important role in chemistry. They are not same. So, it is important to distinguish between observations & theories.
Answer to Problem 2RQ
Observations are essential in the subject chemistry. Chemists use observations to collect as well as record the data. Theory is a group of connected ideas or concepts intended to describe something. For example: Newton observe the apples fall down from the tree. After this Newton gave a theory that there might be some force, which pull the apples down toward the ground. This theory is known as gravity.
Explanation of Solution
The difference between an observation and a theoryis mentioned below:
Observation | Theory |
Something perceived that caused curiosity. | Witnessed over and over always same results. |
An equation or statement, which reliably predicts pattern in nature. | The explanation of events or observations. |
Attempts to explain “what” happens. | Attempts to explain “why” or “how anything/ somethings happens. |
Based on calculations. | Based on inference. |
For example: Newton observe the apples fall down from the tree. | For example: After this Newton gave a theory that there might be some force, which pull the apples down toward the ground. This theory is knownas gravity. |
