Answer to Problem 6LC
The oxygen molecules collide with each other and with the wall of the container and transfer energy.
Explanation of Solution
The behavior of gases is described by the kinetic molecular theory. The main assumptions of the kinetic molecular theory are as follows:
- There is no energy gain or loss when molecules collide.
- In a container, the space occupied by gas molecules is extremely minimal.
- These molecules always move at a constant speed.
- Particles collide with one another, and the container walls cause the gas pressure to build up.
So as per the kinetic molecular theory, when oxygen is sealed in a container, the molecules of the gas collide with one another and exchange energy with other oxygen molecules or the container wall.
