Question
Chapter 13.2, Problem 16LC
Interpretation Introduction
Interpretation:
It is to be explained why evaporation lowers the liquid’s temperature.
Concept Introduction :
As a liquid transforms into a gas, evaporation, a sort of vaporization, occurs on the liquid's surface.
Expert Solution & Answer
Answer to Problem 16LC
The average kinetic energy of remaining liquid molecules decreases.
Explanation of Solution
A minimum energy called threshold energy is required by liquid molecules to escape. When liquid molecules reach a specific threshold of kinetic energy, they erupt from the surface and turn into vapor. The liquid molecules that are still present now have less kinetic energy as a result. The temperature of the remaining liquid drops while evaporation takes place.
