Chapter 13.5, Problem 1SB
Summary Introduction

To review:

The key features that suggest that mutant trait shows cytoplasmic inheritance.

Introduction:

Inheritance does not occur only through nuclear DNA (deoxynucleotide ribonucleic acid). The DNA may occur in various cell organelles (like mitochondria or chloroplast) present in the cytoplasm of the cell. The inheritance that occurs due to the DNA present in the organelles is known as cytoplasmic inheritance. It can occur through the mitochondrial DNA or through the DNA present in the chloroplast of the cells.

DNA sequencing of your own two β-globin genes (one from each of your two Chromosome 11s) reveals a mutation in one of the genes. given this information alone, should you worry about being a carrier of an inherited disease that could be passed on to your children? What other information would you like to have to assess your risk?
Based on what you have learned from the previous topics (CentralDogma: Transcription and Translation) and epigenetics, does epigenetics agree orrun counter (contradict) to the traditional genetic basis of inheritance or the centraldogma of biology?
What characteristics are exhibited by a cytoplasmically inherited trait?
