Interpretation:

A resonance structure is to be drawn for naphthalene and for anthracene that shows the double bonds forming two separate rings. Whether these resonance structures affect the locations of the p AOs in Figure 14-25 is to be determined.

Concept introduction:

Polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons containing two or more aromatic rings that share a bond can contain a single or multiple loops. This depends on whether the shared bond is a single bond or a double bond. If it is a double bond, the loop is closed for each ring on either side of this bond. This leads to multiple loops.
