Concept Introduction:
Alcohols are soluble in water due to the presence of hydroxyl group present in them. The hydroxyl groups result in the formation of hydrogen bonding which makes alcohol soluble in water.
As the number of carbon atoms increases in alcohol, its solubility decreases. If the number of carbon atoms is less, the hydroxyl group is easily available to form hydrogen bonding with water molecules.
