Concept explainers
The motion of particles of a medium which are located at the nodes of standing wave.
Answer to Problem 72A
The medium located at the nodes of the standing wave does not move.
Explanation of Solution
Introduction:
Standing wave is also called as stationary wave. It is the combination of two waves which are moving in opposite direction which each other and have same amplitude and frequency.
Standing waves generally have nodes and antinodes as points that undergo vibrations.
The standing wave is a pattern which is formed by the presence of two waves which have the same frequency and travel in different direction within the same medium.
One of the characteristic features of the standing wave is that there are points on the medium of the wave that does not move and are called nodes.
There are points on the medium that have the maximum displacement, they are called as antinodes.

Conclusion:
Hence, medium located at the nodes of the standing wave does not move.
