Concept Introduction:

Molecules of liquid and solid are held together by a force of attraction. The value of enthalpy of vaporization and sublimation reflects the magnitude of force between the molecules. Greater the value of ΔHvap or ΔHsub, greater will be attractive force between the molecules.

Molecules that have a dipole moment are polar in nature. Polarity or dipole moment is the result of electronegativity differences among elements. Dipole moment is shown by an arrow with tail towards electropositive element and arrow head towards electronegative atom.
