As steam is slowly injected into a turbine, the angular acceleration of the rotor is observed to increase linearly with the time t. Knowing that the rotor starts from rest at t = 0 and that after 10 s the rotor has completed 20 revolutions, write the equations of motion for the rotor and determine (a) the angular velocity at t = 20 s, (b) the time required for the rotor to complete its first 40 revolutions.

- In order to uncoil electrical wire from a 0.6-m-radius spool fixed to a truck, a worker drives to the left with a speed of vA = 5 m/s. At the same time, a second worker holds the cable as he walks to the right with a speed of vB = 3 m/s. Knowing that at the instant shown the thickness of wire on the spool is 40 mm, determine (a) the instantaneous center of rotation of the spool, (b) the velocity of point D on the inside of the spool.arrow_forwardThe mechanism shown below is used in a distribution center to push boxes along a platform and to a loading area. The input link is driven by an electric motor, which, at the instant shown, has a velocity of 25 rad/s and accelerates at a rate of 450 rad/s2. Knowing that the input link has a length of 250 mm, determine the instantaneous acceleration (m/s2) of the end of the input link in the position shown.arrow_forwardA load is to be raised 20 ft by the hoisting system shown. Assuming gear A is initially at rest, accelerates uniformly to a speed of 120 rpm in 5 s, and then maintains a constant speed of 120 rpm, determine (a) the number of revolutions executed by gear A in raising the load, (b) the time required to raise the load.arrow_forward
- A small grinding wheel is attached to the shaft of an electric motor which has a rated speed of 3600 rpm. When the power is turned on, the unit reaches its rated speed in 5 s, and when the power is turned off, the unit coasts to rest in 70 s. Assuming uniformly accelerated motion, determine the number of revolutions that the motor executes (a) in reaching its rated speed, (b) in coasting to rest.arrow_forwardA disk of radius r rolls to the right with a constant velocity v. Denoting by P the point of the rim in contact with the ground at t = 0, derive expressions for the horizontal and vertical components of the velocity of P at any time t.arrow_forwardIn a continuous printing process, paper is drawn into the presses at a constant speed v. Denoting by r the radius of the paper roll at any given time and by b the thickness of the paper, derive an expression for the angular acceleration of the paper roll.arrow_forward
- Two friction wheels A and B are both rotating freely at 300 rpm counterclockwise when they are brought into contact. After 12 s of slippage, during which time each wheel has a constant angular acceleration, wheel B reaches a final angular velocity of 75 rpm counterclockwise. Determine (a) the angular acceleration of each wheel during the period of slippage, (b) the time at which the angular velocity of wheel A is equal to zero.arrow_forwardA person walks radially inward on a platform that is rotating counterclockwise about its center. Knowing that the platform has a constant angular velocity ω and the person walks with a constant speed u relative to the platform, what is the direction of the acceleration of the person at the instant shown? a. Negative x b. Negative y c. Negative x and positive y d. Positive x and positive y e. Negative x and negative yarrow_forwardA radar system is used to track a new experimental space launch vehicle. Early in the vehicle’s flight trajectory, the azimuth angle β is increasing with the constant rate dβ/dt = 20°/s. The elevation angle γ is increasing at the rate dγ/dt = 40°/s, and this rate is increasing at 5°/s2 . Knowing that the distance between O and P is 2 m and that at this instant β = 0° and γ = 30°, determine (a) the angular velocity of the radar system, (b) the angular acceleration of the system, and (c) the velocity and acceleration of point P.arrow_forward
- In the planetary gear system shown, the radius of gears A, B, C, and D is 30 mm and the radius of the outer gear E is 90 mm. Knowing that gear E has an angular velocity of 180 rpm clockwise and that the central gear A has an angular velocity of 240 rpm clockwise, determine (a) the angular velocity of each planetary gear, (b) the angular velocity of the spider connecting the planetary gears.arrow_forwardShow that knowing that at the instant shown, step AB of the step exerciser is rotating counterclockwise at a constant rate O.arrow_forwardGear A Radius = 0.06 m Gear B Radius = 0.3 m Gear C Radius = 0.36 m Note that the Load is Connected to Gear B The system shown starts from rest at t = 0 and accelerates uniformly. Knowing that at t = 4 seconds the velocity of the load is 4.8 m/s downward, determine the radians executed by gear A during the 4 second interval.arrow_forward
