Chapter 16.1, Problem 2R
Summary Introduction

To review:

The comparison of molecular conditions that occur at the lac operon promoter in the absence as well as the presence of lactose.

Introduction:

The operon is generally a cluster of genes containing a single promoter. The operon found in Escherichia coli which encodes three lactose metabolizing enzymes is known as lac operon. Along with promoter lac operon also has an operator, repressor, and regulatory sequences. In the presence of lactose, the enzyme ribonucleic acid (RNA) polymerase attaches to the promoter and initiate transcription. In the absence of lactose, the repressor mainly binds to the promoter and blocks the process.

Students have asked these similar questions
Explain why catabolite repression is used in regulating the lac operon and describe how it fine-tunes b-galactosidase synthesis.
Explain how the data shown indicate that two operator sites are necessary for repression of the lac operon. What would the results have been if all three operator sites were required for the binding of lac repressor?
Identify the different functions of the genes coded in the lac operon region.
