Introduction:
Structures that are specialized for the detection of a stimulus, such as pain and heat, are referred to as a sensory receptor. A sensory receptor converts energy from one form to another. It is involved in the conversion of various forms of stimulus energy, including sound, light, heat, vibration, and touch into nerve signals. Receptors can be classified into three categories based on the stimulus origin, modality, and its location in the body. Based on the modality of the stimulus, receptors can be classified into thermorecepetors, photoreceptors, nociceptors, chemoreceptors, and mechanoreceptors. Based on the stimulus origin, receptors can be classified into exteroceptors, interoceptors, and proprioceptors. Based on the location of receptors in the body, receptors can be classified into general (somesthetic, somatosensory) and special senses.
