Introduction:
A sensory receptor converts energy from one form to another. It is involved in the conversion of various forms of stimulus energy (like sound, light, heat, vibration, and touch) into nerve signals. Receptors can be classified into three categories based on the stimulus origin, modality, and its location in the body. Based on the modality of the stimulus, receptors can be classified into thermo receptors, photoreceptors, nociceptors, chemoreceptors, and mechanoreceptors. Based on the stimulus origin, receptors can be classified into exteroceptors, interoceptors, and proprioceptors. Based on the location of receptors in the body, they can be broadly classified into general (somesthetic, somatosensory) and special senses.
