To discuss:
The general three-neuron pathway typically taken by pain signals to the cerebral cortex.
Introduction:
Information from a receptive field or a receptor is transmitted to a particular area in the cerebral cortex, which is called as sensory projection. Thus, the brain was able to detect the source of the stimulation. The source of the stimulation can be a specific and small location within a sensory receptor, for example the skin or a small place within the retina. The sensory signals reach their final destination in the central nervous system by following the pathways called projection pathways. Most of the sensory signals are delivered to the brain through three neurons namely first-order, second-order, and third-order neurons. Their corresponding axons are termed as first-order, second-order, and third-order nerve fibers. The first-order nerve fibers for pressure, touch, and proprioception are myelinated, large, and fast. The first-order nerve fibers for cold and heat are lightly myelinated or unmyelinated, small, and slower.
