Concept explainers
Interpretation:
Starting from either benzene or phenol how MON-0585 can be synthesized is to be stated.
Concept introduction:
Benzene is subjected to Friedal-Crafts reaction by treating with isopropyl chloride in the presence of AlCl3. The isopropylbenzene is brominated in the benzyl position by reaction with NBS. The bromocompound obtained is treated with phenol in the presence of AlCl3 when a p-substituted phenol is produced. The p-substituted phenol when subjected to another Friedal-Crafts reaction with tert-butylchloride in the presence of AlCl3 will produce MON-0585.
To state:
Starting from benzene how MON-0585 can be synthesized.

- Electrophilic aromatic substitution usually occurs at the 1-position of naphthalene, also called the a position. Predict the major products of the reactions of naphthalene with HNO3, H2SO4.arrow_forwardElectrophilic aromatic substitution usually occurs at the 1-position of naphthalene, also called the a position. Predict the major products of the reactions of naphthalene with fuming sulfuric acid.arrow_forwardCompound A whose molecular formula is C9H11ClO, is found to be aromatic, and on vigorous oxidation with hot, concentrated, basic potassium permanganate followed by acidification, a new aromatic, compound B with the molecular formula of C7H5ClO2 is formed. On treatment with bromine and a ferric bromide catalyst, compound B produces ONLY 2 monobrominated derivatives, compounds C and D, each having the molecular formula C7H4BrClO2. On treatment with sodium metal, compound A produces bubbles of hydrogen gas. Controlled oxidation of compound A with PCC first gives compound E, with formula C9H9ClO. Compound E produces a silver mirror with Tollen’s reagent. Mild oxidation of compound E by chromic acid produces compound F, with the molecular formula C9H9ClO2 which turns blue litmus red. When compound A is heated with concentrated sulfuric acid, a single compound G, whose molecular formula is C9H9Cl, is produced. On ozonolysis followed by reaction with dimethyl sulfide, compound G gives…arrow_forward
- An optically active monoterpene (compound A) with molecular formula C10H18O undergoes catalytic hydrogenation to form an optically inactive compound with molecular formula C10H20O (compound B). When compound B is heated with acid, followed by reaction with O3 and then with dimethyl sulfide, one of the products obtained is 4-methylcyclohexanone. Give possible structures for compounds A and B.arrow_forwardSeveral sulfonylureas, a class of compounds containing RSO2NHCONHR, are useful drugs as orally active replacements for injected insulin in patients with adult-onset diabetes. These drugs decrease blood glucose concentrations by stimulating b cells of the pancreas to release insulin and by increasing the sensitivity of insulin receptors in peripheral tissues to insulin stimulation. Tolbutamide is synthesized by the reaction of the sodium salt of p-toluenesulfonamide and ethyl N-butylcarbamate . Propose a mechanism for this step.arrow_forwardCompound A (C11H23Br) is a secondary alkyl halide. On being heated with a solution of sodium ethoxide in ethanol, compound A yielded a mixture of two alkenes B and C, each having molecular formula C11H22. Catalytic hydrogenation of the major isomer B or the minor isomer C gave only 3,5-diethylheptane. Draw structures for compounds A, B, and C consistent with these observations.arrow_forward
- Which of the following are consistent with the requirements for aromaticity?I. A system with delocalized p electrons in a ring.II. 4n p electrons in the ring.III. All the ring atoms must be carbons.IV. (4n + 2) p electrons in the ring. Give the answer why.arrow_forwardCompound B of molecular formula C9H19N shows a noteworthy infrared absorption at 3300 cm-1. Its 1H-NMR spectrum shows three singlets – δ 1.0 (6H), 1.1 (12H), 1.4 (1H) ppm. Its 13C-NMR spectrum has four signals – δ 25, 28, 41, 64 ppm. Suggest a structure for this compound.arrow_forwardAn unknown compound A of molecular formula C10H18O reacts with H2SO4 to form two compounds (B and C)of molecular formula C10H16. B and C both react with H2 in the presence of Pd-C to form decalin. Ozonolysis of B forms D, and ozonolysis of C forms a diketone E of molecular formula C10H16O2. Identify the structures of compounds A, B, C, and E.arrow_forward
- Following is the structural formula of Surfynol, a defoaming surfactant. Describe the synthesis of this compound from acetylene and a ketone. How many stereoisomers are possible for Surfynol?arrow_forwardAmines are converted into alkenes by a two-step process called Hofmann elimination. SN2 reaction of the amine with an excess of CH3I in the first step yields an intermediate that undergoes E2 reaction when treated with silver oxide as base. Pentylamine, for example, yields 1-pentene. Propose a structure for the intermediate, and explain why it readily undergoes elimination.arrow_forwardCompound AA has a molecular formula of C3H6O and gives a positiveresult using Tollen’s reagent. The reaction of compound AA with hotacidified potassium permanganate, KMnO4 gives compound BB. Thecatalytic hydrogenation of compound AA with nickel, Ni producedcompound CC. The reaction of compound BB with ethanamine,CH3CH2NH2 produces compound DD I) Draw the structural formula of compounds AA, BB, CC and DD. 2)Name the type of chemical reaction for the formation of compound CC.arrow_forward
