Chapter 17, Problem 7MC
Summary Introduction

Introduction:

Autoimmune diseases arise when the body experiences an attackon self-cells and tissues by the immune system. Self-tolerance is achieved by two mechanisms. First being apoptosis (cell death) of cells that recognize self-antigens. Second, development of naive lymphocytes into regulatory T (Treg) cells that are able to recognize antigens but cannot produce the secondary signals. Deficiency of Treg, some genetic component related toMHC (major histocompatibility complex), or any environmental factor including infections are the main causes of autoimmune diseases.
