Introduction:

Early metabolism of cells in the absence of oxygen included oxidation-reduction reactions, ions pumps driven by light energy, and methanogenesis. The penetration of UV (ultraviolet) light in the absence of ozone layer caused the oxidation of elements that were later reduced by the minerals in the Earth’s crust. Bacteriorhodopsin present in the membrane of halophilic archaea performed the first kind of phototrophy.
