Chapter 18, Problem 16P
Interpretation Introduction

Interpretation:

The mitochondrial form of carbamoyl phosphate synthetase is allosterically activated by N-acetyl glutamate. To briefly describe a rationale for this effect.

Concept introduction:

Carbamoyl phosphate synthetase I or CPS I is an enzyme of ligase type, present in the mitochondria and has its function in urea production. The molecule of ammonia is transferred to a bicarbonate molecule from glutamine or glutamate to a phosphorylated by ATP by the action of carbamoyl phosphate synthetase. The carbamate thus obtained is again phosphorylated with the help of an ATP molecule and the resulting carbamoyl phosphate molecule leaves the enzyme. The CPS I enzyme has an important role in protein and nitrogen metabolic pathways. The enzyme Carbamoyl phosphate is added into urea cycle to produce urea.
