Chapter 18.4, Problem 5P
Interpretation Introduction

Interpretation:

The preparation of 2- butanone by a procedure in which all of the carbons originate in acetic acid (CH3CO2H) is to be shown. Also, the synthesis of 2-methyl-4-heptanone from two 4- carbon alcohols is to be proposed.

Concept introduction:

The carboxylic acids contain carboxylic (COOH) functional group in their parent chain and are reduced by with the help of strong reducing agents such as lithium aluminum hydride, LiAlH4, which has the ability to provide a hydride ion.

Aldehydes and ketones contain carbonyl (C=O) functional group in their parent chain. The addition of H2 to a molecule in the presence of a catalyst is known as catalytic hydrogenation reaction. This process is used to reduce aldehydes and ketones to alcohols.

Lithium aluminum hydride and sodium borohydride are strong reducing agents. They are inorganic compounds which are used as the reducing agents in organic synthesis. They are used for the conversion of carboxylic acids, aldehydes and ketones into primary and secondary alcohols.

Bupropion, sold under the trade name of Zyban, is an antidepressant that was approved to aid smoking cessation in 1997. Devise a synthesis of bupropion from benzene, organic compounds that have fewer than ve carbons, and any required inorganic reagents.
(−)-Hyoscyamine, an optically active drug used to treat gastrointestinal disorders, is isolated from Atropa belladonna, the deadly nightshade plant, by a basic aqueous extraction procedure. If too much base is used during isolation, optically inactive material is isolated. (a) Explain this result by drawing a stepwise mechanism. (b) Explain why littorine, an isomer isolated from the tailflower plant in Australia, can be obtained optically pure regardless of the amount of base used during isolation.
Devise a synthesis of benzocaine, ethyl p-aminobenzoate(H2NC6H4CO2CH2CH3), from benzene, organic alcohols, and any neededorganic or inorganic reagents. Benzocaine is the active ingredient in thetopical anesthetic Orajel
