The half cells Sn2+(aq) |Sn(s) and Cl2(g) |Cl(aq) are linked to create a voltaic cell.

  1. (a) Write equations for the oxidation and reduction half-reactions and for the overall (cell) reaction.
  2. (b) Which half-reaction occurs in the anode compartment, and which occurs in the cathode compartment?
  3. (c) Complete the following sentences: Electrons in the external circuit flow from the ______ electrode to the ____ electrode. Negative ions move in the salt bridge from the _____ half-cell to the _____ half-cell.

a.

Interpretation Introduction

Interpretation:

The equations for the oxidation and reduction half reactions have to be determined.

Concept introduction:

Voltaic cell or Galvanic cell:

The device to produce electricity by using chemical reactions. In these divces are redox chemical reactions are occured.

A voltaic cell converts chemical energy into electrical energy.

It consists of two half cells. Each half cell consists of a metal and a solution of a salt of metal. Two half cells are connected by salt bridge.

The chemical reaction in the half cell is an oxidation reduction (redox)reactions.

For example:

Cell diagram of voltaic or galvanic cell is as follows.

Salt bridge                        Cu(s)|Cu2+(aq)  ||  Ag+(aq)|Ag(s)____________     ___________                                       Half cell             Half cell

Explanation of Solution

In the voltaic cell has two half cells. In this cell oxidation occurs at anode and reduction occurs at cathode.

From the given reaction, Sn atom increases their oxidation state 0 to +2.Therefore, it is an oxidation reaction and occurs at anode.

Cl atom reduces their oxidation states 0 to -1. Therefore, it is a reduction reaction occurs at cathode.

Overall reaction is considered as a total reaction occurs at anode and cathode.

Let’s write the two half cell reactions.

Oxidation:  Sn(s)   Sn2+(aq)+2e-Redu

b)

Interpretation Introduction

Interpretation:

The half –reaction occurs in the anode compartment and which occurs in the cathode compartment has to be given.
