Chapter 2, Problem 2.39AP
Interpretation Introduction

Interpretation:

The reason as to why the bond length and bond angle for compound A are larger is to be explained.

Concept introduction:

Newman projection is a way of representing the groups attached to carbon atoms in the C-C bonds. This is used to determine the interaction between the groups attached to carbon atoms and the dihedral angle. The front carbon atom in the Newman projection is represented by the dot and the end on carbon atom is represented by the circle. The groups attached to the carbon atoms are then drawn by the line.

The energy of the conformers varies with change in their dihedral angle. The plot of this variation is known as potential energy curve.

Compound A (C5H8) readily reacts with bromine (Br2) at room temperature to discharge the purple colour of bromine and form Compound B ‍‍(C5H8Br2). When Compound A is treated with H2 in the presence of a transition metal catalyst, it is converted to compound C ‍(C5H10). When treated with HCl, compound A is converted to compound D (C5H9Cl)‍‍. B, Cand D are saturated compounds. Given this information, propose structural formulas for compounds A, B, C, and D.
Diisopinocampheylborane (Ipc2BH) is a chiral organoborane, readily employed for the production of many asymmetric products used in total synthesis. It is a crystalline material that can be prepared as a single enantiomer via the hydroboration of two equivalents of α-pinene with borane.Explain why only one enantiomer of Ipc2BH is formed.
A compound A, C7H12, was found to be optically active. On catalytic reduction over platinum catalyst, 2 equivalents of hydrogen were absorbed, yielding compound B, C7H16. On ozonolysis of A, two fragments were obtained. One fragment was identified as acetic acid. The other fragment, compound C, was an optically active carboxylic acid, C5H10O2. Write the reactions and draw structures for A, B and C.
